In a significant step towards supporting Southern Africa’s mining and industrial sectors, Epiroc has introduced its Epiroc Trailing Cable Service, focused on providing top-quality cable repairs that meet both South African and Australian specifications.
Launched in November 2024 and located at Epiroc’s headquarters in Jet Park, Johannesburg, the JTMEC Cable Repair Service offers turnkey solutions for various cable repair needs, including phase insulation and sheath repairs, complete resplicing, end plug fitment and machine installation.
“Our Cable Repair Service represents a practical solution that aligns with our vision for sustainable, cyclic business practices,” says Kishore Jeebodh, Business Line Manager for Epiroc Electrification Solutions. “By repairing worn cables that customers might otherwise scrap, we not only extend product lifespan but also eliminate the need for costly replacements. Moreover, repairs can be conducted multiple times, further driving down costs for customers while directly contributing to waste reduction. Our mandate is to ensure that our repaired cables perform like new, giving our customers a lower total cost of ownership (TCO) and ultimately delivering greater value.”
While the primary service is based in Jet Park, Epiroc’s logistics support reaches the entire Southern Africa region. Jeebodh confirms that currently, repairs are offered for all MLE equipment, including Boomers, Jumbos, Bolters, Cable Bolters, Easers, as well as Long Hole Drills. Epiroc’s Cable Repair Service is agnostic and compatible with different equipment, allowing repairs to be conducted on any machinery that fits the specified cable standards of 35 – 70mm 640/1100 Vac for South African applications or Australian 241.1 cable specifications.
“Our skilled team of electricians and millwrights has been specially trained by JTMEC experts, who bring years of experience in trailing cable repairs within the Australian market,” affirms Jeebodh. He further emphasizes that, thanks to the expertise of their skilled technicians, their service solutions also extend to non-destructive testing, which is impossible to conduct at the ‘working face’.
By enhancing equipment longevity and reducing waste, Epiroc’s innovative, future-conscious Cable Repair Service ensures that mines and plants can maintain optimal equipment performance, increase uptime and lower operational costs, which are key factors in sustaining long-term success and competitiveness in today’s demanding industrial climate.
