Rolls-Royce expands mtu product range with Kinolt uninterruptible power supply systems

Rolls-Royce is expanding the portfolio of the mtu brand, part of our Power Systems business, to include uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems following the acquisition of Kinolt last year. Kinolt is now a competence centre for dynamic uninterruptible power supplies within Power Systems and from 1 February its flywheel energy storage power supply systems are marketed as mtu Kinetic PowerPacks.

Uninterruptible power supply with mtu Kinetic PowerPack: Rolls-Royce Power Systems integrates the products of Kinolt, acquired in 2020, into its mtu product range. They secure the power supply of safety-critical facilities such as data centers, hospitals or sensitive industrial processes.

For especially critical installations such as data centres, hospitals or industrial plants with sensitive production processes, mtu Kinetic PowerPacks provide continually high energy quality and eliminate ‘parasitic’ effects on the power grid. In the event of a power grid failure, the system reliably safeguards supply without loss of power or voltage.

mtu Kinetic PowerPacks combine the function of an uninterruptible power supply with an emergency power supply, using flywheel energy storage and modern diesel engines. The technology offers high quality supply combined with compact dimensions.

Rolls-Royce’s logo now shines on the production building of the former Kinolt S.A. in Liège (Belgium), which Rolls-Royce acquired in July 2020. The subsidiary, which manufactures uninterruptible power supply solutions for safety-critical installations, was renamed Rolls-Royce Solutions Liège on February 1, 2021. The products now bear the name mtu Kinetic PowerPack.

“As compact UPS systems, mtu Kinetic PowerPacks represent a substantial addition to our range of practice-proven emergency power gensets,” said Andreas Görtz, Vice President Power Generation, Rolls-Royce Power Systems. “We can now offer our customers complete energy security solutions, that are extremely economical in terms of both acquisition and operating costs, for their safety-critical installations. The sales and service organisation will gradually be incorporated into the Power Systems service organisation. As a result, customers will have access to an even closer network.”

The plan to integrate Kinolt’s products into the mtu range was first announced in July 2020 when Rolls-Royce acquired the Liège (Belgium) based manufacturer. Established in 1984 as Euro-Diesel, the company is among the market leaders in uninterruptible, dynamic power supplies. The business formerly known as Kinolt S.A. has been trading as Rolls-Royce Solutions Liège SA since 1 February 2021.
