Enhance Your Shovel Brake Systems

Due to the load requirement and the need to better control the machines, shovel brake systems have had to evolve, both from the standpoint of reliability and safety, while remaining focused on cost reduction. The historical pursuit of building a better brake for that challenge has led to better friction quality, fewer and better-quality wear parts, and better maintenance repair and operations. Fairly recent additions are control devices, such as temperature, release, and wear switches.

Still, increasing the electromechanical shovels’ load capacity can mean a necessary redesign to meet those requirements. Upgrades are needed for the motors and structural components to manage the greater loads. This can significantly impact the braking system’s ability to ensure effective stopping and maintain overall safety and reliability, especially on the standard two-disc brakes.

With that in mind, WPT Power also offers the three-disc brake to mining customers for use in hoist systems for electric shovels. Brake systems need to handle these increased forces generated by the weight or volume of the material to ensure effective and safe stopping. This upgrade can also enhance the maintenance schedules because it extends the intervals between friction changes.

Advantages of the three-disc brake

  • Increased braking capacity.
  • Higher thermal capacity.
  • Longer service life.
  • Reduced maintenance shutdowns.
  • Onboard diagnostics are available through Thermal Sensors, Release, and Wear Switches.

Rope Shovel Brake Replacement

Komatsu® customers can replace with standard two-plate brake or upgrade using our three-disc brake version without modifications on their 2800 and 4100 shovel models. Those models are the; 4100, 4100A, 4100C, 4100XPB, 2800XPA and 2800XPB.
