BHP to test Caterpillar’s new energy transfer system on its mining trucks

BHP Group has announced plans to test a new technology from US-based equipment manufacturer Caterpillar, which enables energy transfer to diesel-electric and battery-electric large mining trucks while they operate on-site.

Caterpillar unveiled its Cat Dynamic Energy Transfer (DET) system earlier this month, highlighting that the implementation of this technology could reduce operating costs for miners and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

The DET system is designed to charge the batteries of electric trucks during operation, enhancing both speed and efficiency.

BHP will be the first to trial this innovative system, with plans to begin testing at its iron ore and copper operations, including the Escondida mine in Chile.

In 2021, BHP announced a collaboration with Caterpillar aimed at deploying zero-emission mining trucks at its sites to reduce operational greenhouse gas emissions.
