Mining Indaba partners with the Association of Women in Mining in Africa (AWIMA) to empower, unite, and expand the influence of Women in Mining across Africa.

As Africa’s mining industry undergoes significant transformation, empowering women is critical for driving sustainable development and gender equality across the continent. Despite its traditionally male-dominated nature, the mining sector presents a unique opportunity for women to contribute their skills and serve as catalysts for change. By promoting female leadership in decision-making processes and key projects, Africa can unlock the full potential of its women and accelerate progress toward a more inclusive and resilient future.

The partnership between Mining Indaba and the African Women in Mining Association (AWIMA) is a vital step in addressing the challenges faced by women in the African mining industry. With the theme for Mining Indaba 2025, “Future-proofing African Mining, Today!” there is a clear focus on advancing Africa’s mining sector while promoting sustainability and equality.

This collaboration marks a pivotal moment, aiming to champion the important role of African women in mining and highlight their contributions to creating a more sustainable and equitable future. Mining Indaba is committed to empowering women, transforming the sector, and fostering open dialogue that leads to progress.

“Mining Indaba is proud to partner with AWIMA in recognizing the incredible contributions of African women in mining. These women bring critical expertise to the sector, driving progress and innovation while overcoming substantial challenges. At Mining Indaba, we celebrate their achievements and are committed to creating a supportive environment where all women in mining can thrive. Their impact is significant, and their potential is boundless,” says Zeinab El-Sayed, Head of Government Partnerships.

### Changing the Narrative
This partnership prioritizes the creation of a supportive environment that promotes the growth and development of women in mining, as well as young women entering the industry. By understanding the obstacles women face and implementing inclusive policies, the industry can foster a positive culture that shapes a more sustainable and successful future. Building a sense of community within the sector is key to achieving these goals.

### Mines within Communities
Beyond addressing gender disparities, the mining industry must strive to create an inclusive and supportive environment for all community members, with a particular focus on empowering women. Companies have a responsibility to address social challenges through sustainable practices and community engagement. By prioritizing gender equality and social inclusion, mining companies can enhance both community development and operational efficiency, benefiting local communities and the industry.

“Mining companies that include women in decision-making processes tend to have stronger relationships with local communities. Women offer unique perspectives that can foster sustainable mining practices, drive innovation, and improve operational efficiency,” says Laura Nicholson, Mining Indaba’s Head of Content & Strategic Partnerships.

In addition, governments and international institutions are increasingly supporting projects that promote gender equality, recognizing the positive impact of inclusivity on industry growth.

Mining Indaba is honored to partner with the Women in Mining Association of Namibia (WiMAN) for a flagship event under AWIMA taking place on October 16-17, 2024. The event, themed “Empowerment through Excellence: Leading Change in Extractive & Energy Sectors,” will bring together professionals, entrepreneurs, and leaders in Namibia’s mining and energy industries. As Africa strengthens its global mining presence, it is essential that women are not left behind. Regional bodies, governments, and the private sector must collaborate to ensure women’s leadership is a priority. The future of African mining will be shaped by those who can adapt, innovate, and lead — and women must be at the heart of that transformation.

“The inaugural Women in Mining Summit in Namibia is thrilled to have Mining Indaba as a partner. This event will provide a groundbreaking platform for women in the sector to network, learn, and grow. With a focus on empowerment, leadership, and entrepreneurship, it aims to equip women with the tools they need to succeed in the extractive and energy sectors,” says Zenzi Awases, Vice President of AWIMA.

Mining Indaba recognizes the significant contributions that women make and aims to increase their inclusion by providing platforms for representation and advancement.
