The Ghana Chamber of Mines Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr. Sulemanu Koney has indicated that it is the ambition of his outfit to make the country the hub of mining services in the sub-region.
He said the Chamber will leverage the opportunities of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to achieve the dream.
With regionalism serving as cornerstones for building a global economy, Ghana is looking to improve its international competitiveness in all aspects of economic activity.
This aims to increase exports and reduce imports, but more importantly to position the country as a hub for certain forms of economic activity where it has globally recognized competitive superiority over its regional neighbours.
As a result, the Ghana Chamber of Mines last week held a media engagement on steps taken so far towards the dream of making Ghana a Mining Services Hub in the sub-region.
Mr. Sulemanu Koney reiterated the idea while answering a question from Modernghana News’ Editor Emmanuel Ajafor Abugri last week on the sidelines of the media engagement to review the Mining Industry’s Performance in 2020.
The Ghana Chamber of Miners CEO disclosed that making Ghana the mining hub in Africa is one of his outfit’s flagship programmes.
He said while the idea was mooted last year, they are in the process of getting a consultant or consortium to help conduct a study to cover the many opportunities within the supply chain of the mining industry.
“For some of the opportunities we have a competitive advantage to actually produce and manufacture some of these. Ghana is a good market but some of the inputs certainly will require larger markets and because we have gold mining taking place seriously within the sub-region; now you have Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal, all of them go into gold production.
“It makes sense that given that we have the first mobile advantage we liberalize our good mining sector even before others did certainly we will have some advantages and we should be able to, in a meaningful way at taking advantage of this as a country,” Mr. Sulemanu Koney shared.
Supporting the idea, the President of the Journalists for Business Advocacy (JBA) Suleiman Mustapha has charged the media to throw the spotlight on the opportunities in Ghana’s mining industry.
